Dancing Through Challenges: Collin’s Journey at Insight School of Washington

At Insight School of Washington, we’re proud to spotlight students who go above and beyond—not just in the classroom, but in life. Meet Collin, a driven 9th grader whose dedication to learning and resilience in the face of challenges is truly inspiring. From day one, Collin has brought a positive attitude and an impressive work ethic to his studies, especially in his Anatomy and Physiology dual credit course—where he’s already earning 15 college credits as a freshman in high school! His CTE teacher, Kathy De Barra said, “He is always an active participant in class and works hard to make the most of out of our learning experiences.”
Collin joined Insight School of Washington after attending a traditional brick-and-mortar school, where he often struggled due to health-related absences and lack of accessibility. Diagnosed with several underlying health conditions, Collin needed a learning environment that offered stability, support, and access. He found that—and more—at Insight School of Washington.

“Being able to reach out directly to teachers and get one-on-one help has made all the difference,” Collin shared. Now splitting time between homes in Tacoma and Gig Harbor, Collin thrives in the online format, where Insight School of Washington ADA-compliant tools make learning easier and more accessible.
Outside the classroom, Collin is deeply committed to ballet. He trains five days a week, over 15 hours weekly, and participates in summer intensives that last up to seven hours a day. Ballet has been part of his life since age three, and it runs in the family—all four of his siblings dance, inspired by their mom, a former ballerina and gymnast.

His favorite performance? The Nutcracker, of course! When he’s not dancing, Collin enjoys cooking (his curry and tamales are always a hit!) and even invests in the stock market. “I’m still figuring out what I want to do,” he says, “but I know I want to build something meaningful.”
Collin’s typical day starts with schoolwork and online class meetings, usually done by noon. After that, he and his older brother head to the gym and then ballet practice. Managing school, health, and hobbies takes structure, and Insight School of Washington schedule helps him keep it all in balance.
He’s already looking ahead to 10th grade, working closely with his counselor to prepare for college applications and exploring scholarships and grants. His long-term goal? Earning an associate’s degree before graduating high school and pursuing a career in health sciences through Insight School of Washington College and Career Prep program.
Collin feels deeply connected to his online school community, even though he has yet to meet some of his classmates in person. “Insight School of Washington works great for independent learners like me. I like being able to take charge of my education and still have time for everything else in my life.” We’re so proud to have Collin as part of the Insight School of Washington community. His passion, determination, and heart for learning demonstrate everything we stand for.
