At Insight School of Washington (ISWA), being a part of the National Honor Society chapter is a commitment to community impact, personal growth, and meaningful connection, even in a fully online learning environment. 

What Is the National Honor Society? 

The National Honor Society, commonly known as NHS, is one of the nation’s most respected student organizations. Founded in 1921, NHS recognizes high school students who demonstrate excellence not only in academics but also in leadership, service, and character. ISWA was the first online school in Washington to have a National Honor Society. 

Membership is earned through strong academic performance and a demonstrated dedication to serving others. Students participate in service projects, collaborate with peers, build leadership skills, and contribute positively to their schools and communities. For many, NHS becomes a cornerstone of their high school experience and a strong foundation for college and career readiness. 

NHS in an Online School Setting 

At ISWA, NHS operates in a way that reflects the unique strengths of online learning. Members meet virtually, collaborate through digital platforms, and coordinate service efforts that can be completed both in their local communities and from home. 

Rather than limiting involvement, the online format expands it. Students from across Washington connect weekly via Zoom with their advisor and fellow members to brainstorm projects, track volunteer hours, and strengthen teamwork. The virtual environment also allows students to participate in service activities that align with their personal schedules and community needs. 

Senior Grecia explains, “Even though it is an online school, I still feel involved and supported.” Her experience reflects a common theme among NHS members at ISWA: connection is not defined by a physical classroom. 

Service That Makes a Difference 

Service is at the heart of NHS, and ISWA students have embraced that mission in deeply meaningful ways. One project that has united members is the Love it Forward initiative. Students write handwritten cards filled with encouragement and kindness for individuals and families facing illness, grief, or hardship. While the act may seem small, the impact is powerful. 

Ashton, another dedicated NHS member, shares, “I’ve been making cards for Love it Forward, and veterans, and I really think the words such as ‘you are brave’ or ‘you are strong’ can really make a difference for somebody more than we know.” 

In addition to writing cards, students have honored veterans by placing American flags at gravesites during community service projects and returning afterward to help with cleanup. Others continue seeking new ways to serve, from community-based volunteering to virtual outreach efforts that can be completed from home. These projects highlight how NHS at ISWA blends traditional service values with modern accessibility. 

Building Skills for the Future 

Beyond volunteer hours, NHS membership equips students with lifelong skills. Through regular meetings, collaborative planning, and balancing academics with service commitments, members strengthen their leadership, communication, teamwork, and time management abilities. 

Online learning adds another layer of growth. Students manage their own schedules, attend live virtual meetings, and take ownership of both academic and extracurricular responsibilities. The result is a group of students who are not only high-achieving scholars, but also self-motivated and community-minded leaders. 

Redefining Connection in Online Education 

One common misconception about online schools is that students lack involvement or community engagement. NHS at ISWA tells a different story. 

Members meet weekly, participate in team-building activities, and work together on service initiatives that extend far beyond their computer screens. They demonstrate that connection is built through shared purpose and consistent collaboration, not simply proximity. 

Through their commitment to scholarship, leadership, service, and character, ISWA’s National Honor Society members continue to make a meaningful impact in their communities while showing what’s possible in an online learning environment.
