Insight School of Washington Student Success Story: Echo

Finding Her Place in a Virtual Community 

In a small rural town like Morton, Washington, opportunities for connection and leadership can feel limited for teens, especially for those attending school online. One local student is showing how virtual learning can do more than deliver academics. It can create meaningful relationships, leadership opportunities, and a strong sense of belonging. 

Echo, a junior at Insight School of Washington (ISWA), is helping redefine what student engagement looks like in a virtual environment through her role as the school’s High School Associated Student Body (ASB) Secretary.  

Echo enrolled at ISWA in late 2024 after searching for a school that better matched her learning style and offered a more balanced academic experience. Since making the switch, she has quickly immersed herself in both her coursework and student life. She enjoys creative writing and psychology and recently explored her interest in criminal justice through her Morton school district course as she considers a future career as a detective.

Leadership Through Associated Student Body 

It is through ASB, however, where Echo’s leadership and passion for connection truly shine. This past holiday season, she helped plan and host a virtual movie night featuring “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” The event brought together approximately 20 students from across Washington State for trivia, chat discussions, and shared conversation, offering a rare opportunity for students to connect beyond their usual virtual classrooms. The success of the event has already inspired the ASB team to begin planning their next statewide virtual gathering. 

Echo and her fellow ASB leaders are also laying the groundwork for ISWA’s 2026 in-person prom, which will take place in Puyallup. For Echo, the opportunity to help plan a large-scale event and then attend it in person represents the best of both worlds, virtual collaboration paired with real-life connection. 

Extracurriculars and Family Time 

Outside of her leadership role, Echo maintains a full schedule. She runs for her local track team and plays both marimba and flute in Morton’s school district band program. At home, she enjoys spending time with her four cats, two Persians, a Himalayan, and a tabby. She is hoping to fit in a winter break trip to a trampoline park in Tacoma or Olympia.

Academically, Echo is thriving. She is on track to complete all of her junior-year coursework early and is looking ahead to her senior year with confidence, momentum, and a clear sense of purpose. 

Echo’s story reflects how virtual schools like ISWA can open doors for rural students, offering leadership opportunities, statewide connections, and a strong community that extends far beyond geographic boundaries. Through online engagement and student-led initiatives, students are finding their voices, building confidence, and shaping their school experience in meaningful ways.
