Tokala’s Path to Success: Learning, Leading, and Giving Back

Stories & Spotlights

Tokala has a strong passion for math and science. While math comes easily for her, she thinks science is fascinating due to the way it explains how things work. Among the inspiring educators at Insight School of Washington Tokala loves her classes with Mr. Poling and Mrs. Mason. Mr. Poling is so funny and makes learning so fun. He always makes me laugh! Mrs. Mason is super nice and always happy, which makes my day better every time I see her!” said Tokala.

Beyond academics, Tokala is actively involved in student leadership and career-focused programs. As a member of the Associated Student Body (ASB), Tokala helps plan events and represents middle school students. Additionally, being part of SkillsUSA provides her the opportunity to explore career paths and develop valuable skills for the future.

Giving back to the community is a significant part of Tokala’s life. Having experienced housing insecurity as a child, Tokala is deeply passionate about helping others in similar situations. This compassion has led to volunteer work with Chief Seattle Club, an organization supporting the homeless Native American population. Through donations of clothes, sleeping bags, and food, Tokala aims to make a meaningful impact.

Tokala’s dedication to service extends beyond this initiative. In 2016, Tokala volunteered at the Standing Rock Sioux reservation’s #NoDAPL protests, or Dakota Access Pipeline protest, assisting with clothing distribution, meal preparation, and camp cleanup. Another initiative she has taken part in involved making and distributing burritos and tamales to people in need near her hometown.

Currently, Tokala tries to volunteer at least three times a year, with a goal of spreading awareness about the importance of kindness and community support. Plans for an upcoming community service event include a beach cleanup to help protect marine life from pollution in the Puget Sound.

Tokala envisions a future in forensic science with the FBI or engineering with NASA. Both career paths align with her interests in problem-solving, science, and making a difference in the world. Tokala is deeply concerned about human trafficking and missing persons cases and hopes to play a role in locating and safeguarding those at risk.

When not engaged in academics or volunteering, Tokala enjoys spending time with friends, attending church youth group events, camping, hiking, and sitting by a campfire listening to stories. Tokala’s journey at Insight School of Washington is a testament to resilience, leadership, and a heart dedicated to service. With bright aspirations and a compassionate spirit, Tokala is sure to make a lasting impact on the world.
