What Online School Looks Like: A Student Day in the Life Q&A With Victoria
See how and why online school works for Victoria in this Student Advisory Council blog series.
By: Victoria G., 9th grade student and SAC intern
K12 asked this year’s Student Advisory Council cohort what makes online school so great and here’s what our own Victoria had to say.
My K12 Why
What do you like about Insight School of Washington (ISWA)? Why does online learning work for you?
I like ISWA because I don’t have to worry about anxiety or feeling out of place. I can do my work, chitchat if I want to, and join a club to connect with others more. The balance works great for me.
Why did you switch to online school?
We had tried a different online school, but it didn’t offer many social opportunities or support. ISWA offered similar clubs and activities to in-person school, so that helped make our choice.
My Online School Day
Can you describe a typical day and week for your virtual school experience at ISWA?
Each day I typically have live online class, modules to complete, break, more live class and assignments, and then I’m done for the day. I also have clubs and my internship on some days, so my schedule can vary.
What classes are you taking right now?
I’m taking math, English, anatomy and physiology, digital literacy, and state history.
What do you like to do on your breaks?
I usually get a snack, play with my two dogs, and stretch.
I love reading a good book too. I love fantasy books like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. Anything magical really, but books grounded in reality are also good.
My Teachers & Classmates
Who’s your favorite teacher?
My math and English teachers are my favorites. My math teacher is very kind, and I like how she lets us use her class presentations for notes and practice. I like my English teacher because she doesn’t let things get too crazy in class and keeps us focused.
My teachers are all very supportive and understanding, making sure we learn the material and know we can contact them if extra help is needed.
Are you in any school clubs?
I’m in a lot of the leadership clubs offered, though I’ve been in art and chess clubs before.
What are your hobbies?
I like to be with my family, play badminton, swim, make art, and listen to music. I really enjoy painting ceramics. Online school helps me incorporate those hobbies into my school days, like jamming to music while I study or practicing badminton during my break.
Can you tell us about your workspace?
It’s got everything I need for now, but I plan on decorating it with some trinkets or something. Maybe just a calendar to start.
What’s the most interesting place you’ve done school work?
My computer had been put on a cat tree while my family and I were preparing to move. It made for a surprisingly workable desk!
My Future
What do you want to do after high school?
I want to go into marketing, internet marketing maybe, or a copywriter.
Do you feel that online school at ISWA is helping you prepare for the future?
I’ve learned to make a resume, gotten an internship through K12, and have been in leadership roles in the clubs at my school, so it’s definitely helped me dip my toes into the business world and develop soft skills that I can apply in the workforce.
