Leading the Game – Patrick’s Rise in eSports and Academics
Graduating high school is an achievement worth celebrating, but for Patrick, a recent graduate of Insight School of Washington, his journey was anything but ordinary. As the 2024 eSports Captain for the school, Patrick not only excelled academically but also found a thriving community in the world of online gaming. His story is one of resilience, passion, and the power of virtual learning.
Finding Insight School of Washington
Patrick first learned about Insight School of Washington when the pandemic hit. His parents, searching for a better educational environment, discovered the online school. He initially spent a year in a hybrid model—half online and half in-person—but quickly realized that online learning accelerated his ability to absorb and apply information. The flexibility and structure of virtual education allowed him to learn in a way that best suited his needs.
One of the biggest challenges Patrick faced in traditional school was chronic migraines. In a brick-and-mortar setting, he experienced migraines almost daily, making learning a constant struggle. However, after transitioning to online learning, the frequency of his migraines significantly decreased. This improvement in his health allowed him to focus more on his education and personal interests and even opened the doors to cultivate a social life.
Thriving in eSports and Online Learning
Over his three years at Insight School of Washington, Patrick not only excelled in his coursework but also became the Captain of the school’s eSports team. Leading a team of six members, Patrick helped create a strong and competitive unit, playing games like League of Legends and scrimmaging against college-level teams in Washington State. Competing against college players as a high school student was both a challenge and an opportunity for growth, helping him and his teammates improve their skills and prepare for future opportunities in the gaming world.
Patrick attended classes three to four days a week, balancing his coursework with gaming practice in between. His ability to structure his schedule around his learning preferences meant he could complete assignments in bursts of focused activity, a method that helped him maintain straight A’s. Without the pressure of in-person interactions, Patrick was able to create a personalized learning environment, allowing him to excel academically while managing his health.
A Passion for Fantasy and Storytelling
Outside of school and eSports, Patrick is an avid reader with a deep love for fantasy literature. His passion extends beyond just reading—he has actively contributed to the literary world by editing and beta-reading books. Through Reddit, he spent a year helping a fellow writer refine their fantasy novel, gaining valuable experience in storytelling and critique.
Despite his preference for a virtual environment due to medical reasons, Patrick was able to connect with his eSports teammates beyond the screen. Over the summer, he met up with some of them at a local theme park, strengthening their bond beyond just the digital realm. Even though his primary connections remain online, he has built a tight-knit group of friends who share his interests.
Looking to the Future
As Patrick moves forward, he is considering a future in architecture, business, or marketing—fields that align with both his analytical and creative strengths. In addition to his school’s eSports team, Patrick has also been playing at an amateur level outside of school for 1.5 years, even competing in playoffs. His commitment to gaming and strategic thinking could open doors to potential collegiate eSports opportunities.
When he’s not immersed in school, gaming, or books, Patrick enjoys spending quality time with his family. They bond over board games, creating cherished moments that balance out his online activities.
The Power of Virtual Learning
For Patrick, the shift to Insight School of Washington was life changing. The flexibility of online education allowed him to take control of his learning, improve his health, and dedicate time to his passions. His story is a testament to how virtual schooling can provide students with the environment they need to thrive.
With his dedication, leadership, and drive, there is no doubt that Patrick has a bright future ahead.
